Abstract

Purpose: Using a quantitative method named "Referenced Publication Year Spectroscopy" (RPYS), this research tries to determine the historical roots of semantic web research. RPYS pave the way for determining the significant years and works in semantic web.
Methodology: The initial data of this study, which uses a scientometric method, have been extracted from the Web of Science. Using RPYS software, the revised data were analyzed and visualized in Excel.
Findings: The distribution of cited references in information behavior revealed 6 peaks within 20th century, respectively in 1962, 1965, 1975, 1979, 1983, and 1995.
Conclousion: Based on the study findings, it seems that semantic Web research has been shaped intellectually by fields such as Linguistics, Knowledge Representation, and Artificial Intelligence
